We hate to nag, but there are certain chores that you shouldn’t skip no matter how busy you are. Do it for your visitors, your housemates, and most importantly, do it for yourself. Your future self will thank you.
1. Doing The Dishes
We know a guy who once cooked up a storm in the kitchen and left his food on the stove for about a week. When his housemate raised the lid one day, he had the horror of his life. Inside the wok was a party of maggots, flies and other creepy crawlers you wouldn’t want to think about. Moral of the story? Never leave your dirty dishes unattended for too long. That’s one way to keep out roaches and other unwanted guests.
2. Folding Your Laundry
How do you overcome mountains in your life? By dealing with them when they’re still molehills. Same goes with your laundry. Don’t let it pile up. Instead, one of the easiest ways to tackle your absolute resentment for laundry-folding is to fold your clothes in front of the TV, because your favorite show might just make the chore more tolerable. If it still doesn’t work, then set aside 30 minutes of your day to turn that mountain of clothes into a molehill.
Vacuuming isn’t as bad as it looks. It’s a much easier way to eradicate dust, spider webs, microscopic cookie crumbs and loose strands of hair. You could also get in a good workout if you vacuum long enough — all that stretching and bending will eventually lead to sculpted arms and a toned figure.
4. Cleaning Your Bathroom
If there’s one thing guests are secretly afraid of, it’s dirty bathrooms. Grimy toilet bowls and dirty floors with ugly clumps of hair in the drainhole… not a very pleasant sight. In addition, you don’t want your bathroom to be a breeding ground for germs, so make sure you scrub the underside of the toilet bowl rim with toilet cleaner. And while you’re at it, give your bathroom tiles a good scrub and maybe throw in an air freshener for good measure.
5. Declutter Your Dining Area
Most houses we’ve walked into tend to have very cluttered dining areas. The dining table features a varied feast of newspapers, mails, pens, snacks, toys, electronic devices, dirty cups, shoes. Okay, we were kidding about the shoes, but you get the gist. The dining area should not be taken for granted because it’s one of the rooms in a house where people feel most comfortable being in. It’s a place where you eat, converse and entertain your guests.
6. Wiping Surfaces
Some cultures believe that sneezing is a result of being gossiped about. But when you’re constantly sneezing? We believe that’s the dust allergy telling you to clean your place. Give your countertops and the open surfaces of your furniture a quick wipe, coupled with a few squirts of cleaning detergent to eradicate bacteria.
7. Taking Out The Trash
When your garbage can starts to stink, that’s the trash talking. Get it out before it starts to stink, because the stench will attract roaches and other pests. Secure the top of the bag with a tight knot and take your garbage out everyday. Don’t keep it overnight.
8. Watering The Plants
For those with plants, this is definitely crucial. If you constantly “forget” to water your plants, then you won’t be having very much of them left. Replacing them would be more time consuming than maintaining them.
